If you could read out loud a bilingual story book to your kid then it will be easy for him or her to get familiar with the new language. Books are a great way to enhance vocabulary of your kid. You can get story books in different languages, and you can search a library or online book store for the book you are looking for.
2- Play time with other bilingual kids
Play time with other bilingual kids can be a great way to make your kid learn a new language. During the play time at a park or some other place, your kid will easily learn new words and phrases from other bilingual kids. For example, you can find a play group of Spanish or French speaking kids in your area; you can also call them over to your place and let your kids play with them. It is also important that you are closely knit with the people of your community, who have the same culture and language as you have. Parents should also interact, so that they can exchange their ideas on how to raise bilingual kids in a better way.
3- Listening to bilingual songs
Music is a great way to grab the attention of your kid, we know that infants listen and respond to music in the womb as well. All kids respond to music very well and if you can make them listen to songs in your native language, they would learn the language in a quick manner. You can listen to music in a new language any where, in your house, in your car, almost every where. If the songs are catchy and your kid enjoys them, make them listen to the songs over and over again. Most of the kids learn new words and phrases in a different language with the help of bilingual songs. Switch on the channel in that particular language on your TV regularly, you can also search for songs and videos online in the language of your choice.
4- Bilingual games for kids
There are many games, puzzles, maps, building blocks, talking dolls and other such toys available for kids in different languages. As far as Spanish and French are concerned, there are a lot of games available in both the languages for kids of all ages. Kids learn through playing games because it is a fun thing for them and they enjoy it. You can also play different games with your kids, such as, alphabet search and things that start with a particular letter. You can ask your kids to scan around the house and in the play area for things and objects that start with a letter from the new language.
5- Watching bilingual cartoons
Bilingual cartoons are the most easily accessible resource for your kids to learn a new language. There are many channels which show cartoons in Spanish, French, Chinese and other languages. All kids love watching cartoons, and kids can relate with the cartoon characters, and can easily learn new words and phrases while watching and listening.
6- Exploring the world around us
Go on little adventures with your child and find things in nature that you can identify in your second language. Caterpillars, grass, squirrels, rocks, etc. If you need help you can bring a dictionary with you to look them up. Encourage your children to make up stories using the new “funny sounding” words, and use their imagination when exploring. Not only is this good for new vocabulary retention, it will help them exercise their creative juices which is good medicine!
